This is most likely due to what has been programmed as the voicemail speed dial button - I assume you are pressing that button to check voicemail, or perhaps you are dialing *97 to check voicemail manually?
If this button has been programmed with *97, then the system will be prompting for your mailbox number, which is different behaviour from asterisk-based systems you may have used before.
If this button is programmed to dial your extension, and the call flow does not have the 'allow user to call themselves' box checked, then the call will be sent right to your voicemail box, and you will not be prompted for their mailbox number.
The system matches the owner of the device they are calling from with the owner of the mailbox they've just dialed into.
You can test this out right away by dialing your own extension number - are you then prompted for your mailbox number, or are you asked for your password right away? Or, does your phone ring?
You may need to change your phone configuration, or system configuration, if this is not working as expected - please contact your administrator if need be to have this completed.
