1) Download the X-Lite 'softphone':
- Windows? Download here: (http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite-for-windows-download.html)
- Mac? Download here: (http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite-for-mac-download.html)
2) Install and run X-Lite in the same way that you do other applications.
The following directions exactly match the Mac OS, but Windows is very similar.
3) Mac: Click on 'X-Lite', and then 'Preferences'

4) Mac: Click on the 'Accounts' button to list the account configurations

5) Mac: Double-click on the account you want to edit. If adding your first account, click the '+' button in the lower-left.
6) Mac: Complete the fields as below --
- Account Name: Use a friendly name (your reference only)
The following settings are all under the 'General' tab:
- User ID: Use the information provided (this is normally the same as your extension number)
- Domain: Use the information provided
- Password: Use the information provided
- Display Name: Use your 'friendly' extension number, ie: 103
- Auth Name: Use the information provided; same as 'User ID'
All other settings under the 'General' tab should be the default.

7) Mac: Complete the fields as below --
The following settings are all under the 'Advanced' tab:
- Reregister every: 360 seconds
- Maximum time: 360 seconds
- Enable 'Send SIP keep-alives'
- Enable 'Use rport'

8) Mac: When all that is done, click the 'OK' button
9) To activate the account and register with the system, click the 'Enabled' checkbox next to the account you'd like to enable.
10) The status indicator will change to Yellow, then Green when it is registered and ready to use. Welcome to the convenience of the world of softphones!
11) Please note: an additional setting is recommended: under 'Calls' - it is called 'RTP Inactivity Timer'. By default, it is set to 30 seconds, which may cause your phone to hang up suddenly while leaving voicemail messages. Please set this to something higher, such as 1800s.
You can also set it to '0', which will disable the feature.
